What Constitutes an Emergency?
An emergency exists for your pet if he or she is experiencing:
An emergency exists when your pet is experiencing a life-threatening or serious condition that requires immediate veterinary attention. Some of the most common signs include:
- Difficulty Breathing: Noisy breathing, gasping for air, or a blue tongue.
- Uncontrolled Bleeding: Bleeding that does not stop despite applying pressure with a clean cloth.
- Bloating or Abdominal Distress: Swollen, distended, or painful abdomen, with or without vomiting.
- Urination or Defecation Problems: Inability to urinate or defecate despite efforts, or pain during these activities.
- Heatstroke: Heavy panting, extreme weakness, or body temperature of 104°F (40°C) or higher.
- Labor Complications: Difficulty delivering puppies or kittens—labor contractions lasting longer than one hour, or more than 15 minutes with visible fetus or membranes.
- Neurological Issues: Loss of balance, consciousness, seizures, tremors, coma, convulsions, sudden blindness, head tilting, unusual aggression or withdrawal.
- Severe Pain: Persistent or intense pain that does not improve.
- Major Trauma: Injuries from falls, being hit by a car, lacerations, broken bones, or shock.
- Signs of Collapse or Weakness: Weakness, fainting, shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils, or confused appearance.
- Poison Ingestion: Bring the container or a list of ingredients if your pet has ingested a toxic substance.
- Penetrating Wounds: Especially to the chest or abdomen.
- Non-Weight Bearing Lameness: Inability to use a limb.
- Eye Problems: Any eye injury, infection, or sudden vision change.
